In 2010, film maker Joel Gilbert set out to prove that Paul McCartney is dead. Now, with Elvis Found Alive, he shows us that the King of Rock and Roll isn’t. In the film’s first few minutes, with nothing more than a box of heavily but insufficiently redacted Freedom of Information documents, Gilbert and his film crew trace Presley to a modest, suburban home in which he has apparently been living for quite some time under his longtime alias “Jon Burrows.”

Presley supplies a two-hour narrative with so many cultural and political footnotes that only an intrepid and indefatigable researcher could have fact-checked them all. The part of Presley’s tale covering his official lifespan is rife with so much insider information, it will be only somewhat familiar to most rock-and-roll fans. The film goes on to not only connect many well-known Presley dots (Col. Parker’s gambling debts, Presley’s Memphis Mafia and the actual Mafia, his Federal Agent status, his identification with Captain Marvel, Jr., and his choice of stage apparel) but also supplies many new and even more explosive facts, including but not limited to Presley’s role in Bob Dylan’s conversion to Christianity, his stopping the Weather Underground, his failure to stop the ascension of either its leader, Bill Ayers ,or Ayer’s close friend, Barack Obama, and the conditions under which Presley will make yet another comeback.

More than anything, Elvis Found Alive is an adventure, a romp through an unknown Elvis “history,” insider stories, and amazing and shocking connections that will leave your head spinning. The film could be easily be described as a psychological thriller. Elvis Found Alive is certainly the most fascinating and innovative documentary ever made about the America’s greatest socio-cultural icon, highly recommended!

The idea of Elvis faking his death has been around since his passing. There are enough strange things to make you scratch your head enough to convince some that “The King” may have faked his death. Gilbert takes the evidence and wraps it up into a fun documentary.

We begin with Joel Gilbert, as himself, made a freedom of information request to the government for all files on Elvis, and it doesn’t take long for a box to arrive. The group works hard to remove the ink that was used to blacken out information and they succeed, coming up with an address of a man that is on the witness protection program by the name of Jon Burrows. Gilbert and the gang go to the address and, remarkably, Elvis lives and grants Gilbert an exclusive interview. It was very easy for me to be drawn in and it became a documentary narrated by Elvis. This is a very thorough documentary and one that any Elvis fan would enjoy, and I’m an Elvis fan. It is broken up into different segments, which include his rise, the controversy, the mob, the faking of a death, the rise of the hippies, becoming an FBI agent and more.

Joel Gilbert does it again. ELVIS FOUND ALIVE is a great documentary from a unique angle, making it enjoyable for Elvis fans as well as those that aren’t. ELVIS FOUND ALIVE is a winner. Joel Gilbert is a fantastic filmmaker and this is another example of his creativity and unique approach to documentaries. I highly recommend this one.

I want to congratulate you on a Super Accomplishment. Your DVD, The Rolling Thunder and The Gospel Years is an extraordinary document that takes people into the inner circle of the people who worked closely with Bob Dylan. Your questions brought forth new insights from everyone you interviewed. I also appreciate the excellent pacing, clever choices and humor in your editing. The word of mouth about how great the DVD is will travel to Dylan fans around the world.

While Revealed isn’t the snazziest documentary on Bob Dylan nor all that artfully laid, the video nonetheless is an engrossing oral record from those who were there: Scarlet Rivera, Mickey Jones, Barry Feinstein, Jerry Wexler, and a cast of many who deliver both glowing praise, gushing idolatry, ribald criticism, and fond reminiscence upon the glory days and beyond, from conversion to conversion to conversion to conversion and back again. Director Joel Gilbert may not be the most accomplished auteur, but, in Revealed, you’re going see and hear a lot of things you won’t get elsewhere.

The documentary is buoyed by a colorful, lively presentation of the subject matter and Watson’s own agreeable personality makes the journey a pleasant one. It’s that bare-all aspect of Never Ending Tour Diaries that helps the production transcend mere fandom and enter the world of harsh rock reality. As with director Joel Gilbert’s other Dylan documentaries, the man himself did not actively participate in the production other than appearing in vintage footage and photographs. But Gilbert has learned how to bridge the gap and make the absence of Dylan and his music a virtual non-factor. Each successive release has been more revealing and more satisfying. Here, the storytelling and the presentation quality hit their mark.

Credit must be given where credit is due. For an independent production, the presentation quality here is outstanding. The picture (16:9 widescreen) is top notch, at least in the main interview segments between Winston Watson and Joel Gilbert, creatively presented with a lot of graphic panache. Enjoy the ride as Winston Watson shares his tour diaries then shuffle over to a computer and drill down to the MP3s for some music that’s great Dylan-less music.
