Essential Information for Bob Fans

Film: Bob Dylan World Tours 1966-1974

By Dylan | October 2, 2007

All Bob Dylan fans will find Joel Gilbert’s work essential. On this project, Gilbert interviews photographer, Barry Feinstein, who unveils many previously unseen photos from the infamous ’66 World Tour, the ’71 Bangla Desh concert, and the ’74 comeback tour. Mr. Gilbert painstakingly revisits the site of Dylan’s motorcycle accident and “Big Pink” where Dylan and The Band recorded “The Basement Tapes”. But perhaps even more revealing is Joel’s interviews as he hunts down firsthand accounts from Dylan’s most fruitful years such as Feinstein, Al Aronowitz, D.A. Pennebaker, A. J. Weberman, Bruce Langhorne & Izzy Young. The interview with Al Aronowitz is particularly important for posterity since Aronowitz passed away soon after the interview took place. My favorite interview however is with the nutty A. J. Weberman, self proclaimed Dylanologist, who admits to harrassing Dylan. There is a moment in the interview where Joel looks at the camraman to make sure he is getting it all. The look on Mr. Gilbert’s face is priceless as Weberman has gone through one of his psychotic rants.

All of Gilbert’s interviews throughout the film are poignant and revealing. Anyone interested in the upcoming Scorcese documentary would be doing themselves a disservice if they did not purchase Joel Gilbert’s “Bob Dylan World Tours 1966-1974, Through the Camera of Barry Feinstein”. Not many recent Dylan projects disclose new information, but Gilbert delivers!
